When buying second-hand clothing wholesale, one of the first questions buyers ask is: How is used clothing sorted and graded?

Unlike new garments, every piece of used clothing can be different. The condition, style, material, season and demand can vary from one garment to another.

That is why used clothing sorting and grading are important steps before wholesale orders are packed and shipped.

At our factory in China, we sort used clothing according to different categories and quality requirements before preparing it for overseas customers.

In this article, we will explain how our used clothes sorting process works, what we look for during quality inspection, and what buyers should understand about Grade A used clothing.

What Is Used Clothing Sorting?

Used clothing sorting is the process of separating second-hand garments into different categories according to their type, condition and other requirements.

When used clothing arrives at our facility, it is not immediately packed and shipped.

First, the clothing needs to be opened, checked and sorted.

Depending on the order requirements, garments can be separated into categories such as:

T-shirts

Shirts

Jeans

Trousers

Jackets

Dresses

Children's clothing

Sweaters

Sportswear

Other clothing categories

During the sorting process, unsuitable pieces are also removed according to the agreed quality requirements.

For wholesale buyers, proper sorting is important because it helps make the final shipment more consistent and easier to sell in the target market.

Sorting by Category

The first major step in our sorting process is category sorting.

Different buyers may have different product requirements. Some customers may want a specific category, such as used jeans or second-hand children's clothing, while others may order mixed clothing.

Our workers separate garments according to the product category required for the order.

For example, jeans can be collected separately from shirts, while jackets and children's clothing can be handled as different product groups.

Category sorting also makes the next stages of quality inspection and packing more efficient.

For customers buying used clothes wholesale, clear product categories can make it easier to plan inventory and organize sales after the shipment arrives.

Sorting by Season

Season is another factor that can be considered during used clothing sorting.

Clothing suitable for summer is different from clothing normally sold during colder seasons.

Summer clothing may include T-shirts, shorts, dresses and lightweight shirts.

Winter and cold-weather clothing can include jackets, sweaters, coats and heavier garments.

The right seasonal mix depends on the buyer's market.

For example, a wholesaler selling clothing in a warm climate may have a different demand from a buyer located in a colder market.

For this reason, buyers should communicate their target market and preferred product mix before placing a wholesale order.

Quality Inspection During Used Clothing Grading

After the initial category sorting, the clothing goes through quality inspection.

This is an important part of the second hand clothing grading process.

Workers check the garments for their overall condition and separate them according to the required quality standard.

Depending on the product and customer requirements, factors considered during inspection can include:

Overall appearance

Visible stains

Holes or serious damage

Fabric condition

Zippers and buttons

Wear and tear

General usability

Not every market uses exactly the same grading requirements.

A buyer looking for resale-quality clothing may have different expectations from a buyer purchasing lower-cost mixed clothing.

Therefore, when discussing used clothing grading, it is important to confirm the specific quality standard with the supplier rather than relying only on a grade name.
